Sometimes, as mums we tend to think we are being selfish for doing something for ourselves.
That the needs of everyone else should come before our own.
How many times have you FINALLY taken a few hours to do something like go to the hairdresser and your child decides to have a meltdown as you leave the house!! It gets the mum guilt going, that’s for sure!!
However, I am a big believer in that if you look after yourself, you can look after others better! It’s the same analogy as when you are on the plane and the flight attendant tells you that in the event of an emergency make sure you put on your oxygen mask first before you help others. You need to help yourself, before you can help others.
If you don’t adopt healthy habits and look after your body then you are going to burn out.
Now, I’m not saying that you need to spend hours and hours doing things for yourself and hiring babysitters and having nothing to do with your kids. I’m talking about 30 minutes of exercise. Every day. Without fail.
You can even include your kids in the exercise if you want. It doesn’t matter what it looks like for you. What matters is that you make it a priority.
I find the best way to do this is to get it done first thing. If you need to eat, that’s fine but then get – it – done! The longer you leave it throughout the day, the less likely that it’s going to happen.
If you need to be out of the house at a certain hour, work backwards from that time, adding in your 30 minutes. If you can only manage 10 at first, that’s great!! Work with that and then try to find ways to build it up to more.

- You will be more organised
- You will want to do more adventurous activities
- You will get more sleep and be more relaxed
- You will be in a better mood
- You will be less prone to heart disease, cholesterol and other diseases which means you will live longer!
- You are creating healthy habits for your family to follow
- It can help with your brain and memory!
So next time you think that you don’t have time to exercise because you are being selfish, I want you to think of this list.
Then – turn the priority around…. By doing this exercise first thing, I am benefiting my family!
